Geography

Intent

At Coleshill, our intention is to inspire in our children a curiosity, fascination and understanding of the world and its people.  Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it and their responsibility for it. To develop a respectful understanding of other cultures. To gain a responsibility for the environment and develop local and global citizenship. We equip children with skills to be practical, thoughtful and curious geographers. To use the school community and local environment to demonstrate first- hand the wonders and challenges in our area. To use the example of local stewardship to empower pupils to be future stewards of the wider world.

Implementation

In Reception, Geography is taught within our Early Years Curriculum and at Key Stage 1, both Year 1 and Year 2 study 3 Geography topics a year.  Please read our Geography Policy and Progression of Skills for further information:

Impact

Here is what some of our pupils say about why it is important to learn Geography and what they have enjoyed learning the most:

Luka – I think learning about Geography is important because if you were lost in a different country you might be able to figure out where you are!

Conrad – I think learning about Geography is important because you get to know the names of lots of countries

Harry – I found it really interested when we made a flip book showing our house, town or village, county, country, continent and then planet.  It was like you were zooming out of your house!

Joshua – I have found learning about St. Vincent and comparing it to England really interesting.

Oliver – My favourite thing was when we did the dot painting when we were learning about Australia

Quinn – I enjoyed it when we made the map of St. Vincent and drew pictures to show different things on the island using coordinates
