Art and Design

Intent

At Coleshill, our intention is to equip our children with the skills and techniques needed to become creative and expressive artists.  We aim to take inspiration from local and global artists and encourage them to see the world through an artistic lens.  We aim to give opportunities to experiment with a variety of mediums so that the children feel confident and free to experiment with their ideas and to express their own interpretation of the world around them.

Implementation

In Reception, Art and Design is taught within our Early Years Curriculum and at Key Stage 1, both Year 1 and Year 2 study three Art and Design topics a year.  Please read our Art and Design Policy and Progression of Skills for further information:

Impact

Here is what some of our pupils say about why it is important to learn Art and Design and what they have enjoyed learning the most:

Quinn – It’s good to learn Art because you get to learn about different portraits and artists.

Oliver – I think Art is fun because we made faces out of fruits and lentils and we made faces inspired by Picasso and painted them using pastels.

Dougie – I think Art is fun because we got to make faces on the computer and change the colours like PopArt.

Isak – I liked it when we learned where to put the features on a portrait and we drew lines over a face.

Joshua -  I enjoyed it when we used the potter’s wheel.

James – I liked it when we drew circles and overlapped them and used watercolours to colour them in.

Quinn – I enjoyed it when we tested loads of different ways of using pastels and made different patterns.

Luka – I liked it when we learned all the different watercolour techniques like splattering, a gradient wash, wet on wet, wet on dry, dry brushing and the one where we drew something in a white crayon and painted over it, it still showed!

Conrad – I liked it when we got a colour paint and added white to make it lighter and black to make it darker.
